故事讲述在一个威权体制（an authoritarian regime）逐渐瓦解的府邸（the palace）内，一年时间里发生的事情。。Causton is buzzing at the opening of a new brewery on the site of a famously cursed Abbey. But excitement turns to fear when a man is found boiled to death in one of the vats. DCI Barnaby and DS Winter are puzzled| could this really be about beer?。啞吧（金峰）幼時被家人遺棄，自小被賴家獨子金火（張佩山）欺侮，但依然性格善良且樂於助人。金火娶得美麗的新娘秀枝（凌波），然而金火粗暴的個性嚇倒新娘，加上金火與已婚女工阿滿（凌玲）有染，從此對新娘不但全無興趣並經常打罵。啞吧為報賴家養育之恩，隱瞞阿滿與金火的姦情，令金火免牢獄之災。秀枝感激啞吧替夫解圍，為其縫製了一套新衣，遭夫痛毆，並把啞吧驅逐出門。後來賴家遭人縱火，啞吧向賴家奔去捨己救人……。
