服装设计师马楚蕙事业蒸蒸日上，感情生活却不甚其烦：与商人百韬的畸恋欲断难断，百韬的妻女丽萍和美颐又三番五次上门挑畔、闹事…… 马来西亚时装展示会上，丽萍误杀百韬，嫁祸楚蕙，面对困境，楚蕙相依为命的弟弟、妹妹楚华和楚苓责怪楚蕙连累了他们。警探秋明和律师政南鼎力相助，替楚蕙洗脱了罪名。美颐发誓要血债血偿。楚蕙的时装生意越做越大，政南、楚蕙、楚苓三人在情感上却纠缠不清…… 楚蕙的父亲济才刑满出狱，与美颐联手，迷昏楚蕙任人欺负，并拍了照以敲诈楚蕙。楚蕙还发现政南周旋于两姐妹之间，万念俱灰，服毒自杀，幸被楚华发现。楚华得知楚蕙的遭遇，找济才算帐，混乱中却误伤济才，楚蕙毅然自首，一心求死。秋明原来是楚蕙失散多年的弟弟楚明，楚蕙决心振作起来，与警方合作，为自己洗清罪名…… 楚蕙终于无罪释放，而美颐则成了通辑犯。在楚苓、政南的婚礼上，楚蕙前来道贺，美颐潜入婚礼现场，...。The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely.
